How to Create a Cross Math Puzzle

Building your own cross math puzzle only takes a few steps:

  1. Pick a shape. Use the Shapes dropdown to choose the outline the equations are arranged in, or leave it on Random for a new layout every time.
  2. Choose the operations. Turn +, -, ×, and ÷ on or off to decide which math your puzzle practices.
  3. Set the numbers. Use Range to set the smallest and largest values allowed in the equations, and Difficulty to decide how many numbers are left blank.
  4. Check the challenge. Toggle Show results off to see the puzzle exactly as a solver will, and click Optimize if you want the generator to vary the numbers used.

Cross Math, Crossmath, Math Cross, or Cross-Figure: What's the Difference?

Cross Math, Crossmath, Math Cross, and cross number puzzle are all names for the same game: a crossword-shaped grid where every row and column is a small equation, and the solver fills in the missing numbers so that every equation is true. "Cross Math" is simply the name used here; the puzzle works exactly the same way whichever name you know it by.

A math crossword usually means something slightly different: a normal crossword grid with numbered clues, where the clues happen to be math problems and the answers are written into the squares. The grid is a crossword; only the clues are mathematical.

A cross-figure (or crossfigure) is the numeric cousin of the crossword: it also has an Across and Down clue list, but each answer is a multi-digit number placed one digit per square. There are no operators printed in the grid at all.

Kakuro is a different puzzle again: every run of squares carries a target sum, you fill it with the digits 1 to 9, and no digit may repeat inside a run. Only addition is involved, and there are no visible equations.

Whichever term you searched for, this generator builds the cross math version: complete equations laid out in a cross-shaped grid, with the operators and equals signs printed for you and the numbers left to work out.

Choose the Puzzle Shape

A cross math puzzle doesn't have to be a plain rectangle. Use the Shapes dropdown to lay the equations out as a picture: Flower, Pine Tree, Cross, Open Cross, Chain, Spider, Wind Rose, Shuriken, Frog, or Dense.

Each named shape has a fixed number of equations, shown in brackets next to its name, so you can pick one that matches how much work you want to give your solvers. A shape with more equations means a longer activity and more intersections to reason about.

Leave the dropdown on Random and the generator builds a fresh layout each time instead of following a fixed outline. Random is also the only mode where the Problems slider is active, letting you choose exactly how many equations the puzzle contains, anywhere from 4 to 20.

The named shapes are a nice touch for seasonal or themed worksheets: a pine tree for December, a flower for spring, a frog for a nature unit.

Choose the Math Operations

Use the Operators buttons to decide which math the puzzle practices. Each one is a toggle, so you can use a single operation or combine all four:

  • + Addition, on its own, for early learners
  • - Subtraction, alone or paired with addition
  • × Multiplication, for times-table practice
  • ÷ Division, which the generator always keeps to whole-number results

Mixing operations makes a puzzle noticeably harder, because solvers can't settle into one routine: each equation has to be read before it can be solved. Sticking to one operation is the fastest way to drill a single skill.

Some of the picture shapes need more than one operation to be filled in properly. If you pick one of those, the generator keeps the minimum number of operators switched on for you.

Set the Number Range

Use the Range boxes to set the smallest and largest values the puzzle may use. The first box is the minimum, the second the maximum, and together they control how big the arithmetic gets.

A range of 1 to 20 keeps everything inside the first times tables and single-column addition. Widening it to 1 to 100 brings in carrying and borrowing, and going further still pushes into multi-digit work.

The two values stay sensibly apart: the maximum is always at least four times the minimum, so the generator has enough room to build equations that actually balance. If you set one box past that point, the other adjusts to match.

If the generator tells you it can't build a puzzle, the range is almost always the reason: a minimum set too high, a maximum set too low, or too many problems asked for in too narrow a band of numbers. Widen the range, or ask for fewer problems, and try again.

Optimize the Puzzle

Click Optimize and the generator reworks the same puzzle, trying to diversify the numbers it uses and cut down on repetitions.

It's worth clicking a few times. Each pass explores a different set of numbers, and a puzzle where the same value doesn't keep reappearing feels fresher to solve and gives more practice across the range you chose.

Customize the Difficulty

Not every cross math puzzle needs to be equally hard.

The Difficulty buttons control how many numbers are left blank: Easy leaves roughly one gap per equation, Medium adds more, and Hard blanks out as many numbers as the puzzle can still support while remaining solvable. The more blanks there are, the more solvers have to work across intersecting equations instead of solving each one on its own.

Difficulty works together with the other options. A wide number range, all four operators, and the Hard setting make a serious challenge; addition only, a range of 1 to 20, and Easy make a gentle warm-up.

Toggle Show results off at any point to hide the answers and see the board exactly as a solver will, then toggle it back on to check the solution.

Tips for Building a Good Cross Math Puzzle
