How to Create a Secret Code Puzzle

Building your own secret code puzzle only takes a few steps:

1. Write your message. Type a sentence, quote, or short message into the generator's text box.
2. Add hint words. Optionally, add a few hint words to help players figure out the trickiest letters.
3. Set the difficulty. Choose how many letters are revealed at the start, and pick which symbols replace the letters.
4. Check the challenge. Toggle Show solution to see how hard the puzzle will be to crack.
5. Generate and share your puzzle. Click Create to generate the puzzle and share it online, or click Print and use the print preview to get it ready for your activity.

Secret Code, Cryptogram, or Crostic: What's the Difference?

Secret Code and Cryptogram are two names for the same puzzle: a substitution cipher that swaps every letter in a message for a different letter, number, or symbol. "Secret Code" is simply the friendlier name used here; the puzzle itself works exactly the same way.

Crostic traditionally refers to something else. The classic Crostic, also called a Double-Crostic or acrostic, is a clue-based puzzle invented in the 1930s: you solve numbered clues like a crossword, and the letters of your answers fill a grid that spells out a quote, while the first letters of the answers, read in order, spell out the quote's author and source. There's no letter-for-symbol substitution involved at all.

These days, though, plenty of puzzle books and apps use "Crostic" as just another name for the substitution-cipher puzzle, so you'll often see the three terms used interchangeably. Whichever name you know it by, this generator builds the substitution-cipher version: swap each letter for a symbol, then crack the code to reveal the message.

Already have a quote in mind? You don't need the search: just type it into the message box followed by a dash and the author's name (for example, Be yourself; everyone else is already taken - Oscar Wilde), and the generator automatically recognizes and separates the attribution. Quotation marks around the message are also stripped automatically.

Using a real quote is an easy way to get an instantly recognizable, attributed message without writing one yourself, and the author's name gives solvers an extra clue to hold onto while they crack the code.

You can also build a fully custom secret code. Type any sentence, quote, or short message you'd like to encode, and the generator will turn it into a puzzle automatically.

Add Hint words to give players an extra clue: type one word per line followed by a colon and a short clue, and every letter in that word will also appear in the encoded message.

Hint Words: Purpose and Limitations

A hint word works like a mini crossword clue placed alongside your secret message. Because the same cipher applies to the whole puzzle, solving that one small word instantly reveals every occurrence of its letters throughout the main message too, giving solvers a foothold beyond whatever letters were revealed at the start.

Hint words do come with a few limits. Every letter in a hint word must already appear somewhere in your secret message; if it doesn't, the generator stops and tells you exactly which letters are missing, so pick words made only of letters you've already used. Hint words also aren't shown for free: solvers still have to answer the clue themselves, unlike the letters revealed automatically at the start.

Because solving one hint word can reveal every occurrence of several letters at once, especially common ones, adding more than one or two can make a puzzle noticeably easier. They're most useful for very short messages or ones with few repeated letters, where there wouldn't otherwise be much to cross-reference and the puzzle could feel like pure guesswork.

Customize the Difficulty

Not every secret code puzzle needs to be equally hard.

Use Reveal to choose how many letters are shown when the puzzle starts, making it easier to get going. Use the Symbols dropdown to decide what appears below each square: Letters, Numbers, Symbols, Emojis, or Greek letters. The Accents dropdown controls how accented letters are treated: ignored, shown pre-filled, or treated as separate letters. Toggle Show solution off to check how challenging your game really is before sharing it.
